What is the function of having such a lengthy description of Jem and Scout playing in the snow? Integrate a quote into your answer. By giving a lenghty description of Jem and Scount playing in the snow and working "hard now," to make a "real snow man," Harper Lee has depicted their child like innocence. The function of this may be so we have something to contrast their behaviours to as they start to grow up.

What is the function of having such a lengthy description of Jem and Scout playing in the snow? Integrate a quote into your answer. As a reader one may see Jem maturing, however in this scene Jem acts a touch more childlike. Scout still holds her childhood traits and with her assistance i believe that Jem lets go of his grown up persona and lets his inner child run free as they create a snowman, as unified siblings.

This is a very good point and I agree that the scene is a bit of a breather from all the growing up Jem in particular is doing, mas he acts far more childlike and innocent.

I would agree to say this a gap in the otherwise serious themes which happen throughout. The lengthy description is good to bring forth the innocence towards the fascinating and miraculous snow.

What is the function of having such a lengthy description of Jem and Scout playing in the snow? Integrate a quote into your answer. The large description of Jem and Scout playing in the snow highlights their youth and innocence, as there is less of this seen as the novel progresses. It reminds the reader that the main characters are still children, who are most interested in building a "real snowman" with "five baskets of earth and two baskets of snow".

I agree with what you have said about the large description highlighting their youth and innocence. It is also a way of tying in the 'coming of age' theme, which plays a big part in the novel.

We see Jem enthusiastically playing with the little snow that falls, highlighting his leftover childhood. This reminds us of the theme of youth and innocence.

Jem and Scout playing with the snow is a reminder that they are still kids and how they are innocent.

The function of this may be so we have something to contrast their behaviours to as they start to grow up. I agree and I also think Harper Lee included this scene as the kids are treated as if they are quite grown up by some characters such as Atticus. I think it's important to include this scene to draw some attention away from the Tom Robinson case as well.

As the story goes on, Harper Lee explores a more dark side to childhood, and I thiink the playing in the snow is almost like comic relief.

Such a lengthy description of Jem and Scout playing in the snow and building a "real snowman" is used to portray their child-like innocence. This paragraph helps us to remind that these two are only children.

I agree with this. The fact that the children wish to "work hard" to make a "real snowman" can also be a symbol for their maturing, as well as their ability to work together so well.

What is the function of having such a lengthy description of Jem and Scout playing in the snow? Integrate a quote into your answer. The long description of the creation of the snowman highlights how the two children are still young and innocent at heart. As Jem was building the snowman he "ran to the backyard, produced the garden hoe and began digging quickly behind the wood pile..." And this show that he was eager to build the snowman since he was digging quickly.

I believe the snow scene is a good break from the rest of the hatred going on in the book. This depicts an image of childhood innocence within both Jem and Scout as they "ran to the backyard" and begun their "real snowman", which shows their excitement as every child would be.
