Crooks is shocked to see Lennie standing in his doorway, telling him, 'you've got no right to be in my room. This here's my room.' Lennie explains that he was simply there to visit his puppy, 'when I seen your light.' When Lennie questions why Crooks he is telling him to leave, he replies, 'cause I'm black. They play cards in there, but I can't play cause I'm black.' This shows us the presence of racism that was common amongst ranches and how common it was during this time period. Lennie thought he could just go into Crooks room and sit with him for a bit, as all the other guys had gone into town, meaning they were both alone. Crooks reaction shows that, though he tries not to show it, he is really very lonely as longs not to be discriminated just because of the colour of his skin.

When Lennie visits Crook, Crook immediately tells him to leave because his room was his beause he was black and he wasn't allowed to be in the bunk house because he was black. You can tell he doesn't like any of the white people because of the way they treat him, but Lennie isn't like that, he just saw his light.

Crooks first initial reply was for Lennie to get out because he was a white men, and they normally don't like crook. But once Lennie starts talking and is persistent to stay, crooks see that Lennie is not like the other men from the range, Lennie is different, harmless and doesn't care about what colour his friends skin is. Crooks was always conscious about what the men would do to him, but when he meet Lennie, he loosens up and let's him in. Crooks tells Lennie a bit about him personal life, and Lennie lets him about what George and him are going to do when they get a enough money.

When Lennie goes to Crooks room, Crooks firstly tells Lennie to leave because he didn't want any white men to enter his room. Slowly, after a bit of back and forth between the two men, Crooks lets him in to sit down. This reveals that Crooks first impression of Lennie was that he was going to be the stereo typical white male, looking for trouble. He becomes to the realisation that Lennie isn't.
