Ralph calls an assembly to 'put things straight'. The boys have lots of assemblies, where they talk and decide things. However, the things they decide to do don't end up getting done. Ralph wants to regain the sense of law and order that the boys had when they first arrived on the island, when they did things such as filling up the coconut shells with water, and only used the rocks beyond the bathing pool for the toilet. He wants to make sure that the boys keep the fire going, and stop them becoming fearful about the beastie.

Page the time, Ralph is also frustrated at the boys because they are not doing what they said they would be doing and this lead them to the fire being let out and them not being rescued. Ralph wants to make sure that this doesn't happen again.

Ralph also wants to, in a way, show the boys that if they don't do what they say they are going to the chances of them being rescued are very slim.

He is trying to solidify all the rules and tasks that is important for the group to keep together. He tries to use this assembly to remind everyone what is prioritised.

Ralph calls the assembly because he is angry about the fire going out and to remind the boys of the rules that they have pushed aside due to laziness. He wants the boys to use the rocks for the lavatory, keep the fire going and take food in need of cooking up to the fire on the mountain to ensure that the fire stays lit. Ralph feels as though the boys need rules and he wants to make himself more assertive so those rules aren't broken. He wants to point out that the community is falling apart because everyone is frightened of something that he thinks isn't real and he wants to fix this by addressing the matter at the assembly.

Why does Ralph call the assembly, and what is he trying to achieve? He is trying to instill the sense of civilisation back in the boys by bringing up toilet issues and also shelter issues.

Why does Ralph call the assembly, and what is he trying to achieve? Normally when Ralph calls an assembly, it is to discuss ideas and to have fun, but this time he is trying to achieve order. The boys have started to become unorganised and careless, but Ralph isn't giving up. He is trying to set things straight again: the fire burning, the shelters, the lavatory, the water...etc. The small things are beginning to become undone, and soon enough larger parts will unravel.

Why does Ralph call the assembly, and what is he trying to achieve? Ralph calls an assembly as he is agitated about the fact that, even after all the assemblies they have had, stuff that has been discussed in those assemblies have not been getting done. He reminds the boys how although they discuss and decide that they will accomplish many things once the assemblies are over, no one actually does any of the work. Ralph is also tells the boys that community is slowly shattering around them out of the fear of the 'beastie'.

Why does Ralph call the assembly, and what is he trying to achieve? Ralph calls the assembly so he can "put things straight" and try to get all of the boys on the same page so that they'll realise that things like the signal fire and smoke are more important than hunting for meat.

Also he is upset how the boys have been lazy and not doing what they have been told at the meetings, such as the signal fire.

He also wanted to call the meeting because they needed "to put things straight" pg. 99 and it wasn't going to be for fun or laughing and falling off the log.

I think it is interesting that this is the first time Ralph has really used his authority over the boys. Previously, while he has set rules and regulations, he has made no move to correct the boys when they don't follow them. I think the fact Ralph called this meeting shows exactly how far his leadership skills have developed throughout the book.

I agree with how you've said that Ralph feels that the boy's need rules and that they can't be broken. I also think he's trying to bring some reality back into the boys minds
